Unrelated Similarities

To the thousands of you posting questions about the doxies and their eyes (okay, maybe only you, Red Hamster, my fabulous bloggy friend and sole other reader than myself), yes, both dogs have one brown eye, and one blue.  Jasper's is the lighter and more noticeable of the two, but the Nut has one, too.  And, the same eye - the right, when facing.

The dogs are not related, at least to the best of our knowledge, but it is one of the reasons Peanut came to live with us.  We got Jasper first, with a plan to get another doxie to keep him company.  But Jasper was so miserable each day when I left for work, crying, and my agreement with the Fiance was that we would get two dogs, I felt under pressure to find a buddy for J-man.

But, as the Fates would have it, no girl doxies were up for adoption that I could find.  Well, there might've been, but if there were there were none memorable and they didn't fit whatever parameters we had set up.  But then I saw Lillie, and though her photo on Petfinder.com was horrible, I thought she herself might be wonderful.  And the age seemed correct, etc.

A few days later Lillie came for a trial run.  And a day or so later I was about to give her back.  SHE WAS A COMPLETE SPAZ.  I mean, Jasper's Mr. Mellow, and here's this crazy nut with springs in her butt bouncing off me, off the walls, off Jasper!  UGH.  The Fiance was very, "I will support you in whatever you decide" (yay, good answer) and I actually called the woman from the rescue, saying I was bringing  her back.  But I was torn.  And so as it was the Fiance's birthday, I took him out and got him drunk, so he would tell me what he REALLY thought, and not just what he thought as a supportive partner (not that I don't like support, but sometimes you just wanna know, ya know?).  Turns out he thought she was a great dog, though yes, very energetic, and was for keeping her.

So the next morning, as he slept, I got up with Lillie (who's always been an early riser) and looked at her.  And I pulled out her paperwork, and began reading, and OH... the reason she's a spaz is that she was barely a year old! SHE'S A PUPPY!  Despite that the ad very specifically said she was about 3.  Hmm, I smell a rat!  But, once I learned that, I felt much better.  Because it wasn't that she was out-of-control maniac dog, she was a PUPPY.  She was supposed to be an out-of-control maniac.

So, Lillie stayed (just in case you didn't see that coming).  And a few months later, the Fiance says, "you know, we said we should get a doxie for Jasper to hang with - Lillie really isn't a great companion for him, cause she's so hyper."

I climbed on board that train lickety-split, and this time the Fates were with us.  Not only was there a lovely-looking girl doxie, but one with the same blue eye!  I called, she was available, and two days later I took the day off, drove to east BFE, and got Peanut - whose real name is Rosebud - from the Humane Society.  The dogs seemed got along with her fine when they met, so we loaded everyone back into the car and headed back to civilization.

And that's when the trouble started.

  1. Thanks for the background on your doxies. Now I'm finally sure of which name goes with each dog, too.

Now what's the rest of the story...about when the trouble started???
